Aprašymas

This Handbook draws together in a single volume an in-depth set of essays addressing the phenomena of marginalization in the Bible and in the Bible's ancient Near Eastern and Greco-Roman contexts.

The volume explores three axes of marginalization: bodily (sensory impairments; communicable illness; mobility impairment; intellectual impairment; gender non-conformity), social (cultic marginalization; women; children; elderly; outsiders); and economic (poverty; enslaved people; taboo professions; carceral bodies). Each category of marginalization is further subdivided with two essays, one on the Hebrew Bible and one on the New Testament. The essays examine the representation of each group within each corpus, the historical realities and structures of power that marginalized these groups, and the way that biblical texts support and deconstruct those structures.

The Routledge Handbook of Marginalization in the Bible is suitable for students and scholars of the Hebrew Bible and New Testament, as well as anyone working on marginalized groups in the ancient world more broadly.
